On December 9, the microfinance program of the Arroyo administration reached its P150 billion milestone, with the distribution of checks totaling P1 million to Central Luzon micro entrepreneurs.
President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo led the distribution of checks to ten microfinance beneficiaries who will use the capital to put up and expand livelihood businesses like farming, convenience store, bakery, and hog raising.
Gloria Iral, Teresita Mercado, Elsie Gongon, Romolito Iral, and Alberto Cristobal received P150,000 each, while Yolanda Lopez, Clarissa Diego, Ruby Garcia, and Geraldine Alberto were each awarded P50,000.
Completing the P150 billion figure was the P50,000 check awarded to Isabelita Mateo of Hagonoy, Bulacan.
With its theme “Tagumpay sa Kahirapan,” the milestone event, that served as the Christmas gathering of some 2,000 microfinance beneficiaries from the province of Bulacan, Pampanga, Nueva Ecija and Tarlac, was held at the Pulilan Central School Gymnasium.
Beneficiaries from the Alalay sa Kaunlaran Inc. (ASKI), Ligas Cooperative, Cooperative Bank of Pampanga, Cooperative Bank of Tarlac, and the Cooperative Rural Bank of Bulacan and Pulilan Central School teachers welcomed President Arroyo as their guest of honor.
To mark the occasion, the President formally introduced Isabelita Mateo to Jenalyn Bermudez, an established micro-entrepreneur, who told Mateo that hard work and perseverance are important in setting up a business.
Bermudez thanked the President for her support to micro-entrepreneurs.
According to a report from the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI), some 277,000 micro, small, and medium enterprises were given financial assistance, and has, in turn, generated 2.9 million jobs.
For her part, Mateo told the President that with her funding, she would work hard to keep her business running and, just like Bermudez, would expand in the future.
Joining the President for the occasion were DTI Secretary Peter Favila, Bulacan Gov. Joselito Mendoza, Bulacan 2nd District Rep. Marivic Alvarado, Pulilan Mayor Vicente Esguerra, BUTIL partylist Rep. Leonila Chavez, National Livelihood Development Corp. President Gondelina Amata, and Cooperative Bank of Bulacan chief operating officer Nestor Custodio. – PND
